Our Projects

Beats Bars and Braun

Our annual Music Production, DJ and MC workshops for young people at NQ House (Manchester’s latest state of the art creative hub based in Openshaw). The programme provides a creative positive diversionary activity for young people in Manchester.

By using the ‘hook’ of music, the project provides young creatives with a safe place to develop transferable skills that equip them to succeed within the creative industries. It enables them to build relationships with one another, create a peer network, develop understanding between other diverse groups and enables them to learn how to confidently air grievances and resolve conflict via music production, participatory practices and verbatim theatre. Participants learn how to DJ, MC and express themselves creatively, they will also learn good timekeeping and management, teamwork, problem-solving, creative design and gain an understanding of lyrical content by exploring appropriate and inappropriate language. Workshops are led by industry professionals, participants will be mentored by award-winning DJ’s and will attend exclusive MC workshops hosted and curated by some of the UK’s finest talent culminating in a community sound clash style event for the local community, demonstrating the new skills that they have learnt as taking part in the project.

#Portal

In 2022 we delivered a project called #PORTAL - a groundbreaking opportunity for young people who may not usually have access to specific training and/or opportunities, to explore and try out different roles within the industry before being sign-posted to paid positions. A unique opportunity for young people to experiment, explore, network and create in a purpose-built environment equipped with the resources and tools required to succeed.

Over 6 months we ran a series of masterclasses, created real work placements and commissioned the work of 3 phenomenal artists.

Groundworks

After piloting multiple training programmes and projects over the past 3 years, with the help of industry professionals, we have curated our music business course designed to give young people the unique opportunity to develop their knowledge, networks, and portfolios across the industry. Whether they want to go into the world of artist management, live music events or music marketing, we’ll help each participant build their confidence and forge their own path.
Co-created with the founder of NQ Records - Michael Adex, this course will focus on building the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in the music business. Participants will engage in both individual and group tasks, research current trends and industry practice, and develop key soft skills. With an emphasis on market research and critical thinking, participants will deliver a practical project to gain real world experience in the industry.

The NQ Legacy team also provide outreach services and programmes to companies that provide services for young people across Manchester. Our Taster Days have become extremely popular with local Schools, Colleges and businesses. We are here for a friendly chat to advise on local services that can support young people’s careers, wellbeing or interests.
